Will Vitamin D Supplementation Help ADHD?
Multiple studies have confirmed that children with ADHD tend to have lower serum vitamin D levels than kids without ADHD. A 2019 meta-analysis found a statistically significant but small effect of Vitamin D supplementation on ADHD — meaning it can help, but if you’re not actually deficient to begin with, you likely won’t feel a dramatic difference.
In 2025, there was another systematic review and meta-analysis that looked at 37 studies and over 24,000 participants. It found:
- Children with ADHD have significantly lower serum vitamin D than healthy peers
- Kids with vitamin D deficiency were nearly twice as likely to have ADHD
- Maternal vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy was also linked to higher ADHD odds in kids
- Supplementation was associated with improvement in total ADHD scores, inattention scores, and parent-rated (Conners) scores
- Supplementation did not significantly improve hyperactivity scores specifically
Vitamin D Supplementation in Pregnancy
If you’re pregnant or planning to be, a 2024 randomized clinical trial that supplemented pregnant women with high-dose vitamin D3 and followed their kids to age 10 found higher natural maternal vitamin D levels were associated with lower ADHD risk — but actively supplementing with high-dose vitamin D3 during pregnancy did not reduce ADHD risk in the children.
Based on this research, while vitamin D is important for your health — and especially while pregnant — focus on getting stable vitamin D levels prior to pregnancy if possible. However, it’s also possible that this study simply found that people who are lower in vitamin D naturally also are more likely to have ADHD… and ADHD is highly genetic.

Who Is Most Likely to Benefit?
Based on the available research, vitamin D supplementation is most worth considering if you or your child:
- Has been tested and found to have low serum vitamin D
- Lives somewhere with limited sun exposure, especially in fall and winter
- Struggles specifically with impulsivity or inattention as primary symptoms
- Is currently on methylphenidate and wants to explore additional evening symptom support (with your prescriber’s input)
How much should I supplement?
General public health recommendations in the US, UK, and EU is between 400–800 IU/day (10–20 mcg). In the ADHD-based studies above, they used higher concentrations:
- 1000 IU/day, given daily for 3 months, was used in the magnesium supplementation study cited above as well as in a separate trial on inflammatory markers.
- 2000 IU/day, given daily for 3 months, was used in another ADHD trial looking at inflammatory biomarkers.
- 50,000 IU/week (roughly equivalent to about 7,150 IU/day) was the dose used in the magnesium + vitamin D combination trial and in the brain-mapping/neurofeedback trial, both run for 8 weeks to 2 months.
For context, up to 4000 IU/day is generally regarded as a safe upper limit for long-term, unsupervised daily use. The higher weekly doses used in these trials were medically supervised, short-term (weeks, not months or years), and specifically aimed at correcting a documented deficiency — not something to replicate on your own without a healthcare provider involved, especially for kids.
Final Thoughts
Vitamin D isn’t a fix for ADHD, but for people who are genuinely low in it, correcting that deficiency could logically support brain function — and the research shows some specific, modest benefits like improved impulsivity, inattention, or better evening symptom management alongside medication.
The most responsible approach is to test first, then supplement if needed under the guidance of a healthcare provider.
