Overview
There is limited evidence for cannabidiol (CBD) and ADHD. Most studies focus on THC-containing products or Autism with ADHD symptoms. Theoretical evidence suggests CBD may be beneficial to ADHD symptoms, especially if paired with a low dose of THC.
Why Do People Say CBD Is Good for ADHD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-intoxicating compound found in cannabis plants, including hemp. Unlike THC, CBD does not produce euphoria, but it interacts with the endocannabinoid system and other neurotransmitter pathways in ways that may be relevant to ADHD symptoms.
Research suggests CBD can influence dopamine indirectly through several mechanisms:
- FAAH inhibition: CBD inhibits the enzyme fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), increasing anandamide levels. Anandamide, an endogenous cannabinoid, modulates dopamine release, especially in reward-related brain circuits. AKA: CBD can stabilize dopamine release.
- 5-HT1A agonism: CBD stimulates serotonin receptors, which can indirectly stabilize dopamine tone. This pathway also supports improvements in mood and emotional regulation. AKA: CBD can stabilize serotonin use.
CBD vs. THC: THC is psychoactive. CBD, in contrast, does not produce intoxication and can counteract some effects of THC, such as anxiety, oxidative stress, or cognitive disruption. This makes high-CBD, low-to-no THC formulations more appealing for medicinal or research-based use.
What the research says about ADHD and CBD
Most studies examining CBD and ADHD use mixed THC/CBD products or aren’t “just” ADHD. Here is a brief overview of all the studies we currently have on the subject:
- This 2017 study was on 30 adults with ADHD. It found that using a 1:1 CBD: THC nasal spray (~2.5mg each) did not worsen cognition, and it improved hyperactivity and cognitive inhibition (hyperactivity in thought) scores that same day. Placebo-controlled, but it was not majority CBD, and the participant count was very low for causal inference.
- This 2019 study was on 53 autistic kids found using a20:1 CBD: THC oil for 2 months. ADHD related improvements: Hyperactivity symptoms improved in 68.4% of the kids and worsened in 2.6%. Sleep problems improved in 71.4% and worsened in 4.7%. Anxiety improved in 47.1% and worsened in 23.5%. Not placebo-controlled.
- This 2026 study was also on 53 AuDHD kids. It was done by the same researchers as the 2019 study (different children) and found the CBD oil was associated with significant improvements in ADHD symptoms. No placebo. Learn more about the specifics in this article.

Is CBD Safe to Try if I Have ADHD?
If you choose to try CBD, work with a physician to create an individualized plan.
CBD is generally well-tolerated in adults and adolescents, with mild side effects such as drowsiness or gastrointestinal discomfort. However, CBD products are not typically tested for purity and likely will have some THC. They are also not required to be accurate: many products contain less CBD than advertised.
Regarding CBD and the brain, this 2021 meta-analysis found that adolescents with ADHD who have used cannabis do not seem to have the worsened executive functioning that is expected. However, there were still brain changes associated with early use of cannabis. While this is not specifically about CBD, cannabis contains both CBD and THC.
CBD can mitigate many negative brain changes associated with THC. To learn more about how to use cannabis safely, if you have ADHD, read this article.
Bottom line
CBD is not a replacement for conventional ADHD treatments but may offer adjunctive support, particularly for emotional regulation and sleep, that may make handling ADHD symptoms easier. It can also indirectly affect dopamine and serotonin, which theoretically makes it a promising support.
However, current research is lacking. If you decide to try CBD, aim for a third-party tested and trusted brand. For more on cannabis (CBD+THC) and ADHD, check out this article here.
