Overview
Ashwagandha is everywhere right now — stress gummies, sleep blends, “adaptogen” powders, all of it. It’s long been used in Ayurvedic medicinal practices, but our current scientific research on ADHD specifically is lacking. The one dedicated ADHD trial we have is small and shows it helps with anxiety and hypersensitivity on top of medication use, not core ADHD symptoms themselves. It likely will help those who struggle with anxiety, stress, and poor sleep alongside their ADHD the most.
What Is Ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a small shrub in the nightshade family, native to India and parts of Africa and the Middle East, where it’s been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years — traditionally as a “rasayana,” or rejuvenating tonic, and specifically as an adaptogen: something meant to help the body handle stress. It’s also called Indian Ginseng, though it isn’t botanically related to true ginseng.
The root is the primary medicinal part, but the part that specifically is the most important are steroidal lactones called withanolides. When you’re shopping for a supplement, you can check the label to see what the withanolide percentage is so you actually know what dose of the active compound you’re getting.
How Does Ashwagandha Work?

It’s an adaptogen. Adaptogens are thought to help modulate the body’s stress response — specifically the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the system that governs cortisol release. Steadier stress hormone levels can mean better emotional regulation and less of the “stress noise” that makes focusing harder.
It’s an antioxidant. The withanolides from Ashwagandha have shown consistent free-radical-scavenging activity, restoring levels of antioxidant enzymes like SOD, catalase, and glutathione in animal brain tissue. Essentially: less oxidative stress in the brain, theoretically better-supported cognitive function.
It affects the cholinergic system. Ashwagandha extracts have been shown to inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE) while also activating choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), the enzyme that helps synthesize acetylcholine in the first place. So it’s working both ends of the same pathway: less breakdown, more production.
Acetylcholine is one of the most important neurotransmitters for memory and attention — it’s the same neurotransmitter targeted by cholinesterase-inhibitor medications used in dementia care, which gives you a sense of how central it is to cognitive function generally.
It activates GABA-A receptors. GABA is the brain’s primary calming neurotransmitter. In one animal study, a methanolic extract (an extract made by processing the plant with methanol, an alcohol solvent, to pull out its active compounds — a lab extraction method, not something you’d find in a bottle on a shelf) activated both synaptic and extrasynaptic GABA-A receptors in hippocampal neurons (source). This might be part of why Ashwagandha has a reputation as a calming/anti-anxiety agent.
It modulates NMDA and AMPA glutamate receptors. These receptors are central to synaptic plasticity — basically, how neurons strengthen connections during learning and memory formation. Animal studies show Ashwagandha and its constituent withanolide A can normalize receptor density in the hippocampus, which is part of the proposed mechanism behind its memory effects.
It supports neurotrophic signaling. Ashwagandha has been shown to promote neuronal growth and branching (axodendritic arborization) in hippocampal neurons, potentially through activation of the TrkA receptor — the same receptor nerve growth factor (NGF) uses. Research Overview
Hosseini et al., 2019 — 28 kids, ages 7–12, ADHD + anxiety, all on their existing ADHD medication. Added 10mg/day Ashwagandha or placebo for 6 weeks. Found: bigger drops in anxiety, hypersensitivity, and social-concern scores with Ashwagandha. No difference between groups on overall ADHD-RS score. (study)
Marchi et al., 2025, BJPsych Open — meta-analysis, 14 RCTs, 713 people, any mental disorder, median dose 600mg/day. Found: large effect on anxiety, held up under a stricter re-analysis. Large effect on sleep quality (only 4 studies). Effect on depression did not hold up under the stricter re-analysis. (study)
Saxena et al., 2026, Frontiers in Nutrition — 85 kids, ages 6–12, KSM-66 Ashwagandha (150mg twice daily) or placebo for 8 weeks. Found: improvements in processing speed, delayed word recall, Stroop accuracy, working memory, and parent-rated sleep. Kids with diagnosed ADHD were excluded from this study. (study)
Katz et al., 2010 — polyherbal formula (Ashwagandha combined with other herbs) improved attention and impulse control in kids with ADHD. Can’t credit Ashwagandha specifically, since it wasn’t tested alone. (study)
Does It Work?
For anxiety, stress, and sleep — the evidence is genuinely solid, especially compared to a lot of herbal ADHD options. For core ADHD symptoms specifically — inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity — there isn’t much research at all and likely won’t help.
Who Is Most Likely to Benefit, and Doses
Based on what we have, Ashwagandha may be worth looking into if:
- Anxiety, stress reactivity, or emotional dysregulation show up alongside your ADHD
- You struggle with getting good quality sleep
- You’re looking for something to layer on top of existing treatment rather than replace core ADHD symptom management
Doses studied: The pediatric ADHD add-on trial used just 10mg/day. The broader meta-analysis found 600mg/day to be the median effective dose across studies, with no extra benefit found above that. The newer pediatric cognition trial used 300mg/day (150mg twice daily).
Final Thoughts
Ashwagandha is not well-studied for ADHD; however, it may be a supportive herb if you experience emotional dysregulation, sleep disturbances, and general anxiety alongside your ADHD.
